Are Anti Aging Skin Products Really Effective?

An endless barrage of beauty and health products is aimed at claiming a portion of our wallets. But, are the anti aging skin products, which are truly promising incredible results, really effective in delivering those promises?

As more and more products come to the market, there is pressure to get them out before a lot of testing is done. So, one has to be skeptical of many of the claims. What can you do to screen some of the bad from good? Let’s discuss some of the substances used and point out some of the good and the bad.

Mineral Oil – This is a substance used in a lot of products! If you check the ingredients of various products you will see it frequently. The reason is that it is very inexpensive.

Mineral oil also goes by some other names as well such as paraffin wax, petroleum, and liquid paraffin. So be aware it is not always easy to see that it is in a product.

Why is it bad? Mineral oil literally clogs the pores! It prevents the skin from properly “breathing” and can actually create conditions for acne.

Moreover, it has a wear and tear effect because it irritates the skin. Over time, as the skin becomes more dependent on it, the effect is to dry and chaff; and, believe it or not, it causes pre-mature aging! This is bad stuff.

Dioxane – This is a synthetic that is a derivative of the coconut. But without going into all the chemical-speak, just know the skin easily absorbs this substance. The problem with that, at least in California, is it's considered a substance that can cause cancer. Why find out?

Fragrances – Many fragrances are produced from substances that are thought to be carcinogenic or toxic. If you want the effect of a pleasant smell, do not get it from your skin care products. Use a dab of perfume. That is much safer.

Alcohol – These also come in a variety of names. And different versions have different effects. However, they all to some degree interact with the skin's natural acidic barrier and dry out the skin. Interrupting the skins protective barrier also exposes you to bacteria and viruses.

Parabens – Again, there are various names. But they all are there only to act as a cheap preservative. Better products will not use this approach. Avoid them for the cancer potential they present.

Hopefully, knowing this list will give you a basis for determining if the anti aging skin products you are interested in will be effective.
